Our group has had over a decade of experience using technology to connect investors and investments, and was a recipient of MAS’ Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) grant. Today, we are leveraging the know-how to streamline the search process for valuers.
Our Story
“Why don’t investors get an independent valuation?”
Asia Valuation Network (AVN) founder, Chauwei Yak, was asked this question by MAS when she went to the regulators for a closed-door discussion as part of the IVAS committee. Because Chauwei was an ex- investment banker, she had an in-house research team to evaluate companies, funds and deals. She then realized that many investors or lawyers who represent these clients might not know who to go to.
The first group that comes to mind when doing valuation or financial due diligence will be the investment banks.
“When I was at JPMorgan and UBS, we will not take on the advisory role for deals less than $100 million. But you don’t have to go for the full investment banking service package when you are doing smaller investments,” Chauwei says.
It is a mistake to think that you don’t need an experienced valuer if you get your accountant to look through the documents. Accounting is not Valuation. Having also worked in New York, London and Tokyo, Chauwei feels that valuation is even more important in Asia (ex-Japan) as the markets are developing and financials can be less transparent.
AVN is the only network of valuers in Singapore – being the only network that follows the guidelines advised by the Chartered Valuer and Appraiser (CVA) program, Asia’s first dedicated program in business valuation.
